Inhaler devices for asthma: a call for action in a neglected field.

چکیده
T he Brussels Declaration, published in the European Respiratory Journal in 2008 [1], recognises the high prevalence of patients with poorly controlled asthma and calls for changes in asthma management across Europe. Prescribing an appropriate inhaler device for asthma, a device that the patient accepts and can handle correctly, is one key element in this process. Inhaler mishandling is very common in real-world clinical practice and can contribute to poor asthma control [2–5].

Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are two of the most prevalent chronic respiratory disorders. Over 800 million people suffer from these diseases and over four million people die annually. Although both asthma and COPD are incurable, symptoms can be effectively controlled through the delivery of medication to the lungs. Inhaler devices are employed to deliver medication to...

Inhaled medications are the preferred therapies for patients with asthma and COPD, but their effectiveness is limited by the patient's ability to use the device properly, an issue often neglected when these medications are prescribed. Correct inhaler technique must be taught and learnt, and requires educational and motivational programs aimed at patients and healthcare providers alike. Written ...
